Vines in Cornas
After visiting the Chateau de Crussol, we continued to the nearby Cornas
to try to find some wine. Unfortunately, it was the end of a Sunday and
no wineries were open, so we instead decided to take advantage of
the evening light to explore some of the vineyards up in the hills
lining the Rhone. Luckily, the vineyards are all open (no fences
or barriers), and the little hill-roads wind right through them.
We were able to get up close and personal with the vines.
Notice how steep the terrain is; we are now toward the southern end of the lower Rhone, but even this far down we still see the characteristically-steep and rocky hillsides of the northern Rhone. It is claimed that this terroir is one of the reasons for the excellent quality of the wine from this region--the vines have to work hard to produce, and that effort goes into making the grapes flavorful and sweet. |
