Amsterdam architecture
| Amsterdam (at least the parts I saw) seems to be characterized by a pretty consistent architectural design: the 3-5 story, narrow, attached houses that you can see here. A fun fact: nearly every building has a steel beam with a hook protruding from the attic--the stairways are too small (and too insanely steep) to move furniture or boxes up or down them, so all moves happen by hooking ropes over these hooks and hoisting stuff in and out through the windows. They even do this with grand pianos! Now you see where those cartoons all came from... |
