The Cote Rotie
Is there any more astounding sight in the world of wine than the
terraced hillsides of the Cote Rotie? The hillsides are insanely steep,
and yet there's not a hectare wasted--the hills are covered by
intricately terraced hillside vineyards, often with only one row of
vines on each terrace level. Imagine the amount of work that must have
gone into creating these vineyards...and how much manual labor must
be needed to maintain and harvest them. Truly amazing.
We ended up eating dinner in a small restaurant up in the hills of the Cote Rotie overlooking the Rhone (near Ampuis). It was an excellent 5-course meal with a tres sympa host who gave us some great leads for wine in the Southern Rhone and Bandol. |
